Police officials said a probe has been underway after a drone was spotted hovering over the sacred temple of Jagannath in Puri early on Sunday. The incident occurred around 4:10 am; this drone was flying over a no-fly zone for approximately 30 minutes, raising serious security issues.

The Puri SP has formed several teams to probe into the incident. High importance has been attached to this event. The operation to pinpoint the individual involved and to confiscate the drone is being planned, a senior police officer informed.

Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan also expressed his displeasure, thus saying “I strongly disapprove of the act of flying drones in the prohibited area, stating that it is unlawful. It is both unlawful and unthinkable to fly a drone above the temple. There will definitely be a severe legal consequence that will be taken against those responsible for this infringement of security,” he said.

In order to avoid similar occurrences in the future, the government is planning to employ stricter security measures. Harichandan disclosed his prophecy to post police guards permanently at the four boundary watchtowers along the temple.

Besides the possibility of its operation by a vlogger, authorities have not completely dismissed other negative motives. “However, the likelihood of a content creator flying the drone cannot be ruled out while the act is evidently with malicious intentions”, stated Harichandan.

This has caused much concern due to the status of the Jagannath Temple both culturally/ religiously and more so because of the security status of the temple. The government remains committed to enhancing security in the temple so as to safeguard its integrity and security. The examinations continue & those who are involved are expected to be arrested soon.
