The seven Indian migrant workers in Singapore whose heroic act of helping to save a woman trapped in a car that fell into a sinkhole would be honored by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam during the next open house at the Istana presidential palace on August 3. The workers, Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah, Velmurugan Muthusamy, Poomalai Saravanan, Ganesan Veerasekar, Bose Ajithkumar, Narayanasamy Mayakrishnan, and Sathapillai Rajendran, rushed to the scene and pulled the woman out within a few minutes using a rope.
Their bravery has resulted in immense praise and charity, and 1,639 donors have contributed SGD 72,000 and more to the charity ItsRainingRaincoats (IRR), which takes care of migrant workers in the city-state of Singapore. The money will be shared equally among workers, and there will be an upcoming meet-and-greet occasion. President Tharman commended them publicly, stating that they were quick and brave, and the Assurance Care and Engagement (ACE) Group of the Ministry of Manpower awarded them the ACE Coin – an award that is given to migrant workers who exhibited exceptional courage or to a person of great public-spiritedness.
However, this has raised questions about whether such coins are enough of a reward for such heroic deeds on social media. The ministry did not overlook the response, saying that more methods to value their contributions are under review. In the meantime, the bravery of the workers has also pointed out the necessity of migrant workers in the daily life and construction projects of Singapore.
The rescue was carried out following the collapse of a concrete piece at one of the work sites of the Public Utilities Board, which led to the sinkhole. Their wit of the moment not only saved a life but also demonstrated the humanity and selflessness that characterize migrant workers so well that they were recognized at the highest echelons of the Singaporean society.
