The DMK members will participate in a prohibition conference conducted by their partner, VCK, at Kings District, Kallakurichi, on October 2. This place is important because of the recent happening of hooch tragedy in June, in which 66 people died in Tamil Nadu. After a discussion between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and the VCK leaders, it was clarified that DMK’s organizing secretary R S Bharathi and MP TKS Elangovan would participate in the meeting.

Following the meeting, Thol Thirumavalan, the president of VCK, reiterated and assured that there was no tension between the two allies, contrary to people’s belief that there was enmity. ‘It was just media creation, ‘ he said, and there is no issue between the DMK party and VCK. Thirumavalan also added that Stalin relieved them by providing DMK’s attendance at their conference.

However, VCK triggered debates regarding such possible political realignment when it invited AIADMK and actor Vijay’s fledging party, founded recently, Tamizha Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). Thirumavalan pointed out that the invitations must not be associated with electoral ideas and plans, adding that the conference aims to increase people’s understanding of the issue of prohibition, including such things as election politics. He also said that although DMK agreed to participate, they never knew the stand of AIADMK regarding attending the function.

Thirumavalan reiterated that the larger issue of alcoholism is what this conference is all about, affecting families in the entire state. It was his time to speak on a national policy on liquor and drugs and how the issue of addiction needs to be done away with, particularly because women lose their kin to the vice. VCK also added that they would not be extending an invite to BJP or its partner organization PMK because of the conflict instigating caste and communalism initiated by the two parties. However, while PMK continues to advocate for the absolute prohibition of liquor, VCK is more fixated on nationwide venture than parochial politics.
