Air India has received four show cause notices by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) of India, the aviation regulator, which pointed out the major violations by the airline of rest periods by cabin crews, duty limits, training, and its procedures. July 23 was the date of notices served, after an investigation that had started with voluntary disclosures by the airline on June 20 and 21.
The notices are reported to have followed the tragic crash of an Air India Boeing 787-8 plane bound to London that crashed in Ahmedabad a month back, taking a total of 260 lives. The DGCA has threatened to take action against Air India in terms of penalties that might be taken as a result of non-compliance with safety standards that were revealed in the course of the review.
The show cause notices are said to emphasize 29 different violations. Among them are cases when the pilots and cabin crewmembers were reportedly denied the mandatory rest periods, flaws in the adherence to the training rules, and inadequacies in training the operations in high-altitude airports. Regulatory intervention was required since such things may jeopardize the safety of passengers and crew members.
Air India, in its official statement, has accepted the notices and assured to reply within the stipulated time. “We have received these notices issued by the regulator on some voluntary disclosures made by Air India during the past year. We shall be writing back to the aforementioned notices within the required time.” An airline spokesperson said, “We are obsessed with crew and passenger safety.”
It is interesting to note that the DGCA move highlights the increased attention on the airline business, especially after big accidents. The review of the regulator is meant to implement stringent measures in terms of safety protocols so that no such incidents are repeated, and such accountability issues are reinforced in India, as it builds the aviation industry at a remarkable rate.
