NEW DELHI: The re-election for the Delhi municipal body is stayed as per an order issued by the Delhi Court. The stay comes a day after a brawl in the Civic office on Friday over the elected members. The brawl broke out on a nullification of a vote by Mayor Shelly Oberoi- apparently, the vote was cast by a BJP councilor that eventually descended into chaos. The Mayor had called a re-election of the standing committee on Feb 27th.
The High Court said that the Mayor announcing re-election without declaring results of previous poll prima facie violates regulations.” Regulations nowhere reflect that Delhi Mayor has authority to declare the election of standing committee members as null and void, the Court said”.
Earlier on Friday, hours after the municipal House was rocked by fresh clashes between the councilors of the BJP and the AAP, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi announced that the elections for the same will be held on February 27 and added until then the house will remain adjourned.
“When I was announcing the standing committee election result, they (BJP councilors) pushed my chair and attacked me. BJP councilors Ravi Negi, Arjun Marwah, Chandan Choudhary, and others inflicted life-threatening attack on me,” she alleged.
On the same day, a plea was moved in the Court to declare the current election process for six members of the Standing Committee to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) as null and void.
Ms. Oberoi was elected as the new mayor of MCD in the recent mayoral polls held.
