New Delhi: BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who faces allegations of sexual harassment from prominent women wrestlers in India, appeared before Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Friday after the court acknowledged the chargesheet filed against him. The court has scheduled the case for July 18 at 2:30 PM. The chargesheet, comprising 1,500 pages, was earlier filed by the Delhi Police, accusing Singh of stalking, sexual harassment, and assault against six female wrestlers.
The chargesheet includes statements from at least 22 witnesses from four different states. Vinod Tomar, also implicated in the case, was summoned to the court as well. Given that both accused individuals are currently present in Delhi, the court set an early date for the hearing.
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a six-time MP, expressed his willingness to appear before the court on July 18, stating that he does not seek any exemption from his appearance, as reported by news agency.
Brij Bhushan Singh has been charged by the Delhi Police on June 15. The chargesheet lists sections 354, 354A, 354D & 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as the relevant charges. These sections pertain to assault or criminal force against a woman with the intention to outrage her modesty, sexual harassment, stalking, and criminal intimidation. Vinod Tomar, on the other hand, is facing charges under sections 109 (abetment of any offence if the act abetted is committed in consequence, and where no express provision is made for its punishment), 354, 354A, and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.
The court proceedings will play a crucial role in determining the course of action and justice for the women wrestlers who have come forward with their allegations against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The case highlights the significance of addressing and combating issues related to sexual harassment within sports and other domains, ensuring a safer environment for all individuals involved.
