PM Modi In Cyprus: Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his significant two-day visit to Cyprus on Monday and departed for Canada. He’s slated to attend the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, on Tuesday. His June 15-16 trip was the first time an Indian Prime Minister visited Cyprus in over two decades, considerably bolstering New Delhi’s ties with Nicosia, a key friend and partner in the Mediterranean and the European Union.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Government and people of Cyprus for conferring upon me ‘The Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III.’ This isn’t my honour. It is an honour for 140 crore Indians. I dedicate this award to the everlasting friendship between India and Cyprus. Together, our nations will contribute towards making a better planet!”, wrote PM Modi on X.

PM Modi In Cyprus; Strategic Importance

Prime Minister Modi’s recent trip marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades, with previous visits by Indira Gandhi in 1982 and Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2002. Despite historical connections, such high-level engagements between the two nations have been infrequent. During his time in Cyprus, PM Modi held bilateral discussions with President Christodoulides in Nicosia and addressed business leaders in Limassol. This visit holds significant strategic, diplomatic, and economic importance, and could also be interpreted as a message to Turkey.

Historically and strategically, the visit is notable given the increasing alignment between Turkey and Pakistan. Turkey has consistently sided with Pakistan on the Kashmir issue and offered support during recent periods of elevated military tension between India and Pakistan.
