The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Andhra Pradesh for October 27, 28, and 29 in anticipation of the severe cyclonic storm, Cyclone Montha. This major weather event is expected to intensify rapidly and is forecasted to make landfall near Kakinada on the coast of Andhra Pradesh on the evening or night of Tuesday, October 28, with maximum sustained wind speeds reaching 90-100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.

Cyclone Montha Threat and Preparations

The severe cyclonic storm is currently a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal and is projected to strengthen into a cyclonic storm by Monday morning before becoming a severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday. The Red Alert signals the likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Rayalaseema from October 27 to 29, which may lead to flash floods and waterlogging.

In preparation for the cyclone’s impact, the Indian Army has announced it is on high alert and standby to assist with disaster response and relief operations. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have also been pre-positioned in vulnerable districts, and the Indian Coast Guard has successfully shepherded hundreds of fishing boats back to shore, with a strict advisory against venturing into the sea until October 29.

Government Response

The Andhra Pradesh government has activated its disaster response machinery, with officials instructed to ensure zero loss of life and minimize property damage. District administrations have been directed to activate control rooms, evacuate residents from low-lying coastal areas, prepare relief camps, and ensure the stock of essential commodities. The coordinated efforts across state and central agencies are focused on a swift and effective response to mitigate the potentially devastating effects of Cyclone Montha. Residents are urged to closely follow official weather advisories and take all necessary precautions.
