Chennai: Cyclone Mandous which made landfall in Tamil Nadu on Friday night has wreaked havoc since then. It has reportedly killed four people and has damaged properties to a greater extent. Now, the meteorological department of Chennai suggests that heavy rainfall is predicted for the coming 24 hours due to the low pressure over the Bay of Bengal.
Schools, Colleges, Parks, and other areas near the coastal regions have been instructed to remain closed until further notice. On Monday also, Chennai and other coastal parts of the South received heavy rainfall. This brings back the flood memories of the state that wreaked havoc last year. As per reports, almost 400 trees were uprooted due to the cyclonic storm which also damaged several properties. A disaster relief team of almost 25,000 personnel was deployed for managing the aftereffect of the cyclone.
About 9000 people were moved to safety zones before the cyclone hit the state. As of now, chilly weather and rainfall continue in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and other coastal regions of the South. Waterlogged areas are being cleaned by the disaster management teams. Traffic movements have also been affected in the majority of the cyclone-hit areas. The effect of the cyclone will be over in 2-3 days, the climate department suggests. Till then there will be heavy to moderate rainfall across the state.
