Cyclone Fengal lashed Puducherry with about 50 cm of rain in the last 24 hours, making it the highest rainfall the region received in the last 30 years and disrupting lives dramatically. The cyclonic storm hit the union territory on Saturday evening, causing widespread waterlogging, damaged trees, and power cuts. The Chief Minister, Mr. N Rangasamy, further said that the Puducherry area received 50 cm of rain and thus witnessed severe floods. “Right now, I am personally visiting the areas that were affected by the floods. Emergency crews are scrambling frantically to rescue those caught up in the floods.”
The Union Territory recorded 48.4 centimeters of rainfall over 24 hours until 8:30 AM on December 1, the highest level since 1995. The floods, which have been described as the heaviest in the country’s history, washed away roads, felled trees, and left many families in the dark due to a blackout starting late Saturday night.
However, there are measures being taken in order to bring things back to normality. EMU train services, which were affected by the storm, were resumed for all suburban districts from December 1. The power ministry and authorities are now working on reopening blocked roads and reconnecting supply power to affected areas.
From the Chennai Garrison Battalion of Dakshin Bharat Area, the Indian Army deployed troops to the devastated areas early on Sunday. District administration and flood control department team, along with the army, has been deployed to evacuate the affected people and provide essentials required for flood victims.
This is why it is necessary to constantly comprehend the potential threat that Cyclone Fengal’s impact has caused and why people in coastal areas need to improve their disaster awareness. This has, however, been dismissed, with authorities coming out in the open to convince the public that everything is being done in an effort to counter the crisis. On the other hand, people are advised to observe and adhere to given safety measures and respond appropriately to the best union territory that can aspire to overcome this natural disaster.
