The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in coastal and adjoining areas of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The storm also brought high winds, gusting up to 150 kilometers per hour.
“Cyclone Warning for Saurashtra & Kutch Coasts: RED MESSAGE. VSCS BIPARJOY at 0530IST of today over NE Arabian Sea near lat 21.9N & long 66.3E, about 280km WSW of Jakhau Port (Gujarat), 290km WSW of Devbhumi Dwarka. To cross near Jakhau Port (Gujarat) by evening of 15June as VSCS”, tweeted IMD.
Earlier on June 13, Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya reviewed the preparedness measures being taken by the central and Gujarat state administration on Cyclone Biparjoy. Cyclone Biparjoy, a severe cyclonic storm, made landfall in India on June 13, 2023. The storm brought heavy rains and strong winds, causing widespread flooding and power disruptions. Several trains were also cancelled in the affected areas.
The heavy rains caused widespread flooding in low-lying areas of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Several rivers and streams overflowed, inundating homes and fields. The flooding also damaged roads and bridges, disrupting transportation leaving 35000 evacuations.
The strong winds knocked down trees and power lines, leaving thousands of people without electricity. The power outages also affected water supply and communication networks.
Several trains were cancelled in the affected areas due to the storm. The East Coast Railway cancelled 15 trains, while the South Central Railway cancelled 10 trains.
The IMD has forecast that the storm will weaken gradually and move away from the coast in the next few hours. However, the damage has already been done. The government has announced relief measures for the affected people.
