In the light of the prevailing controversy over an NCERT Class 8 Social Science textbook, CPI Rajya Sabha MP P. Sandosh Kumar on Friday requested the wholesome review of the educational content rather than just the one controversial chapter that has attracted countrywide attention.

Although he agrees that the controversial part was severely criticised and that the Supreme Court had banned it later, Kumar claimed that no one should restrict the debate to a single textbook. He also showed concerns about what he termed as careless or objectionable contents in other learning materials and whether the same would be subjected to the same scrutiny across board. In his opinion, focusing on only a single chapter of the discussion is a risk factor since it may overlook wider issues in the curriculum structure.

The scandal intensified when the Supreme Court took grave objection to the presence of a sub-chapter named Corruption in the Judiciary in the Class 8 textbook text and noted that this material would have extensive consequences. Thursday, the court served show-cause notices to the Secretary of the Department of Education and Literacy of the Ministry of Education and Director of NCERT Dinesh Prasad Saklani with similar requests, why no action should be taken against the contempt or otherwise.

The chief justice headed bench on its part declined to put suspension to proceedings suo motu, although NCERT provided an apology and imposed a complete ban on the chapter. The court also ordered NCERT to provide comprehensive documentation on the committee, which approves the material, which includes qualification and credential of the members, as the process of vetting the approval process deepens.
