INDIA: On Wednesday, India hits the bleak milestone of 2,00,000 coronavirus confirmed cases as new infected cases emerged to see a rise of more than 8900– highest ever in the last 24 hours, taking the total Covid-19 cases in the country to 2,07,615. This comes at a time when Unlock 1.0 kicked in nationwide with utmost relaxations for economic and public activities outside containment zones.
According to Ministry of Health data, the death toll rises to 5,815 with 217 new fatalities, the second highest deaths recorded in a single day. There are more than 1,00,000 patients who are under active supervision. India stands at fourth position in highest number of active cases in the world and the numbers continue to rise with no sign of relief.
On the positive side, 1,00,302 people were recovered from the disease. India’s recovery rate from novel coronavirus disease zoomed to 48.2% on Wednesday, the highest so far.
Globally, India is the 7th most affected country due to coronvirus outbreak. It has breached 2,00,000 mark in confirmed cases and has surpassed Germany and France to reach this gruesome breakthrough.
Looking at the death count, India’s death rate remains below that of other large countries. Its mortality rate for those with the disease is 2.8%, compared to 5.7% for United States where around 1,06,181 people have died, 14% for the United Kingdom and Italy and 15% for France among others.
Maharashtra reported 2287 new cases & 104 fatalities in the last 24 hours, taking the total count to 72,300 count with a death toll of 2,465.while Tamil Nadu continues to see surge in new cases with recorded over 1000 cases in the last 24 hours.

National Capital, Delhi has also witnessed high surge in fresh cases with 1298 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, this is the biggest spurt in a single day. Delhi has 12333 active cases. The state has recently reported 9243 cases of recovered people and 556 deaths. The state has 22132 cases altogether.
Currently, Nationwide, Lakshdweep is the only island which has remained untouched by the disease which has affected over 2 lakh people in India and more than six million globally.
