INDIA: After the first case emerged in Kerala on 30th January, On Friday, India has surpassed Italy to be the sixth most affected country by the coronavirus pandemic. The development comes after the country recorded a major spike of over 9000 in the number of cases for four consecutive days according to data released by the Johns Hopkins University.

India on Friday reported 9,887 new coronavirus infections, taking the nationwide tally past 2,36,657 lakh. The death toll also rose to 6,642.

In Roughly 10 days, India jumped from 10th position to become Sixth worst hit country. Reportedly, a few days back, on May 25, India took the tenth position on the table with a total of 1.38 lakh confirmed cases, after surpassing Iran, which stood at 1.35 cases.

According to Ministry of Health data,  the death toll rose to 6,642 with 294 new fatalities, the highest deaths recorded in a single day. There are more than 1,15,000 patients who are under active supervision. India stands at third position in highest number of active cases in the world.

 On the positive side, 1,14,072 people were recovered from the disease. India’s recovery rate from novel coronavirus disease zoomed to 48.2% on Saturday, the highest so far.

Maharashtra reported 2436 new cases & 138 fatalities in the last 24 hours. With this, Maharashtra becomes the first state to cross the mark of 80,000 confirmed cases in the country. It has recorded 80,229 total cases and 2849 death toll.

Delhi and Tamil Nadu both recorded over 1000 fresh cases for the tenth day with 1,330 and 1,438 new cases respectively. Notably, Delhi’s death toll also rose by 58.

Standing at the number 2 position, The total number of cases in Tamil Nadu rose to 28694. The death toll of the state is comparatively lower than many with 232 deaths.

Delhi is the third worst hit due to coronavirus after Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Currently, Delhi’s total number of coronavirus cases is 26,334 with 708 death toll.

Bihar has reported 515 new cases in its highest single-day spike.

West Bengal reported 371 new cases, taking its tally to 5,501.

Although, Rajasthan stands at 5th position in the worst hit state in the country but the active cases in Rajasthan is lower than that in Uttar Pradesh as well indicating a better recovery rate in the former state. Presently, Rajasthan has 10084 total cases of coronavirus with 218 deaths.

Chhattisgarh has witnessed a rise of 105 new cases in a single day on Friday — the highest ever recorded from the state. With this, the total tally reached to 880 including 641 active cases and 2 deaths.

Currently, Nationwide, Lakshdweep is the only island which has remained untouched by the disease which has affected over 2.3 lakh people in India and more than six million globally.

Meanwhile, the outbreak has raised the question of Community transmission of coronavirus in India, The ministry of health has continued to insist there isn’t, but with a total of 236,657 cases as of Friday, it is time to accept that in hot spots such as Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai, there is community transmission. Studies in India have shown that around 28% of the people infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus are asymptomatic.
