Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for Mumbai predicting rainfall in areas on Friday. The city, along with Thane and Palghar districts in Maharashtra is preparing for the impact of the rainfall. In fact, the IMD has taken it a step further by issuing a yellow alert for Mumbai until 8:30 am on Friday indicating the seriousness of the situation.
The heavy rains have already caused disruptions in the region. In Mumbai, the Modak Sagar lake, which is a water source for the city started overflowing on Thursday night. Prior to that Tulsi Lake, Vehar Lake and Tansa Lake had already experienced overflow. The continuous rainfall has also resulted in 15 gates of the Tansa dam being opened to release 1,65,000 cusecs of water.
The situation is equally challenging in neighboring Palghar district. Due to rains, the Dhamani dam has released 8,400 cusecs of water while Kawadas dam has discharged 21,100 cusecs of water. In order to prioritize student and staff safety measures, Thane and Palghar administrations have decided to declare Friday as a holiday for all secondary schools well as higher secondary schools. This decision has been made considering heavy rainfall expectations. Ensuring avoidance of any risks to students.
In the Thane district, the recent heavy rainfall has led to waterlogging in areas prompting the evacuation of families, from zones. Moreover, major highways in the district have been affected, resulting in disruptions to traffic flow. Sadly there was an incident in Kalwa town where a man lost his life while fishing in a nullah during the intense showers.
A similar situation has unfolded in Mumbai with the heavy downpour causing waterlogging and traffic congestion on roads. The suburban train services operated by both Central Railways have also experienced delays greatly impacting the commute of countless citizens.
Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and remain informed, about weather advisories. It is crucial for everyone to take precautions to ensure safety and minimize any potential damages caused by the monsoon rains.
