New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu Sunday unveiled a statue of Dr B R Ambedkar in the Supreme Court premises on the occasion of Constitution Day.
Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal paid their tributes to the father of the Indian Constitution folding hands and offering flowers to the over 7-feet tall sculpture.
The plantation of saplings by President Murmu and CJI Chandrachud followed the unveiling. The decision to install the statue of Dr Ambedkar came from a group of lawyers who are closely linked to the Ambedkarite Movement. These lawyers had penned a letter to the CJI last year regarding the same and in September this year, the Supreme Court Arguing Counsel Association (SCACA) also made a representation for the statue installation.
Constitution Day of India, also known as Samvidhan Divas, is celebrated on November 26 every year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. On this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, which came into effect on January 26, 1950. The Constituent Assembly took nearly three years to complete the momentous task of drafting a ‘Samvidhan’ for Independent India. It is the longest-written national constitution in the world.
Since 2015, November 26 is observed as Constitution Day to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. Earlier, the day was observed as Law Day.
Samvidhan is the supreme law of the country and it lays down the framework for the democratic governance of India. It enshrines the fundamental rights of all citizens and it guarantees justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity to all.
