On Thursday, hours before the ink will be signed between India and the UK on the long-awaited Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the Congress party found strong words to attack the Narendra Modi government. The opposition party responded to it by adding to it that economic offenders who have fled India are what India needs, not only a trade deal, but an excellent Fugitive Transfer Agreement which will retrieve the runaway economic offender.
On a post on X (formerly Twitter), the general secretary of Congress (in charge of communications) Jairam Ramesh mockingly made reference to what he called the Modi Model of bhagodanomics, pointing to the continued fugitive status of such high-profile targets as Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, and Lalit Modi, none of whom were brought to justice despite their well-known fugitive status. Ramesh wrote, emphatically referring to the Modi Model of bhagodanomics, but as it happens with Hindutva, some people are just three stars who are yet to stage their ghar wapsi.
In the meantime, India-UK FTA is being touted as a historic trade agreement that will facilitate market entry and make bilateral commerce between the two countries rise by great margins. The deal will be signed with the participation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Keir Starmer of Britain.
Official figures released by the United Kingdom indicate that the trade agreement is expected to boost the two-way trade between the two nations, which is standing at almost 58 billion dollars, by another 34 billion in the long term. This makes it one of the most meaningful partnerships India has got in terms of trade in the recent past.
Whereas the government is rejoicing in the FTA as a significant economic achievement, the acidic political opponents scored well on the accountability and bringing back fugitives who face charges in economic crimes, an aspect that re-emerged in India-based political rhetoric.
