Congress stepped up its attack on Prime Minister Modi on Thursday after he failed to address Donald Trump’s many claims about brokering peace between India and Pakistan. MP Jairam Ramesh said he was worried and surprised that India’s leaders have yet to comment, since Trump claimed credit for helping South Asian countries agree on a truce at least eight times during the past 11 days, in countries including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and others.
President Trump says he used the threat of tariffs to help get India and Pakistan to calm the tensions. In the meantime, our Prime Minister does not seem to care about these accusations. He prefers ‘Tareef’ (praise) over hearing about tariffs, Ramesh added sharply. Sharma claimed that both Sonia and Congress chief Rajeev Gandhi chose not to address Trump’s accusations.
Ramesh added that Trump incorrectly believes India and Pakistan are similar, when clearly India has surpassed Pakistan in economic development. “There is ten times more activity in India’s economy than there is in Pakistan’s economy. Can we really compare the two? Why do the Indian authorities not complain about this treatment?” he wondered.
All this has happened while ‘Operation Sindoor’ is underway in India following the terror incident in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, which took 26 lives on April 22. In the operation, India destroyed nine places connected to organisations like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad in Pakistan. Reports indicate that more than 100 terrorists were dealt with.
Congress is insisting on a response from the Modi government since Trump’s statements could raise questions about India’s national actions and global standing.
