After Prime Minister Modi endorsed a caste census on Tuesday, the Congress party quickly brought up videos of the Prime Minister from the past two years demonstrating his opposition to the idea. Prime Minister Modi praised caste enumeration on Sunday at a meeting with NDA chief ministers and deputy chief ministers as a way to empower and grow the country’s marginalized communities. He stressed that his government prefers giving opportunities to the weak rather than being involved in caste politics. The participants passed two resolutions that praised Prime Minister Modi’s steps after Operation Sindoor and secured support for recording caste data in the upcoming census.

Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, highlighted on social media what he perceived as a difference in statements from the Prime Minister. Ramesh posted videos on two occasions—the first from when Bihar’s caste survey was released on October 2, 2023, and the second from April 28, 2024, where PM Modi had opposed a caste census and linked it to the “urban Naxal mindset” championed by members of the Congress party.

“On April 30, 2025, between the attack in Pahalgam and the launch of Operation Sindoor, the Modi government unpredictably made the surprise announcement of a caste census.” At the last NDA meeting, the PM said he was solely responsible for the victory.

In the videos, Modi accuses the opposition of promoting caste differences and calls people who support a caste census as being on the extreme wing. Although they didn’t release an official statement, BJP president JP Nadda noted that including caste in the census is part of the NDA’s vision to make social justice a priority in development.
