The Congress declared on Wednesday its intention to hold nationwide protests alleging that the Narendra Modi-led government had embarked on vendetta politics following the recent developments in the case of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over the National Herald. The ruling by the party is one day following a Delhi court decision that it was not legally feasible to assume judicial cognisance of the ED charge sheet as the prosecution complaint was founded on the recognition of a personal complaint instead of an FIR attached to a predicate offence.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge gave a harsh criticism on the BJP-led Centre, addressing a press conference at his house, accusing the National Herald case of being politically motivated. He claimed that the newspaper that was started in 1938 was a legacy of the freedom movement in India and charged the government of using misplaced central agencies to assault leaders of Congress and the Gandhi family.

It is pure political revenge in this case. The government is defaming the Congress leadership through investigational agencies, Kharge said and this was aimed at scaring political adversaries and pressuring leaders and MPs into crossing over. He also required Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to resign stating that what the court said is a great blow to the government. Kharge claimed we are struggling this politically, in the streets to Parliament.

General secretary of Congress K C Venugipal indicated that the party would hold protests and demonstrations in different parts of the country to bring about awareness on what it described as the abuse of investigative agencies. In accusing the ED of having been repeatedly employed to harass the Congress and its top leadership in the last 7 years, he said, we will take this political vendetta to the streets of India.
