Sonia Gandhi, the chief of the Congress parliamentary party, formally opened the party’s new office at 9A Kotla Road, New Delhi on Wednesday. This is a new achievement for the oldest established party of the country which formerly functioned from 24 Akbar Road for the last 47 years.
The official opening ceremony began with the national anthem and was followed by Sonia Gandhi cutting a ribbon in conjunction with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Leaders who graced the occasion included the current Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and other Congress stalwarts.
Following an inaugural ceremony, where the Congress party formally inaugurated the new centre seen in a photograph, leaders of the party such as Sonia Gandhi, Kharge, and Rahul Gandhi are seen lighting a lamp at the facility, signalling a new beginning for the party which is synonymous with the Congress party’s new beginning. Several other senior leaders also participated in the event showing the significance of the event.
The change of the party’s headquarters is an important stage in its development. Founded in 1970, 24 Akbar Road was the heart of Congress operations over the years, with several electoral wins, battles of ideas, and internal struggles. This was the place from where, after the emergence of a political untoward incident in the form of an Emergency in the 1970s the Congress under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi was reconstructed. It came down to a handful of hardcore supporters, but she was able to re-emerge and re-direct the party towards a series of victories at the ballot box.
The latest office base at Kotla Road is widely assumed to be a good and new party office complex to symbolize that the Congress organization is alive to the changed reality and is willing and capable of making the necessary legal changes that would enable it to retain its identity in the new premises. Congress party leaders said that they hoped that the new location would give Congress new energy for preparation for future political challenges.
