The latest outburst of Shashi Tharoor, about the Emergency period, has caused yet another uproar within the Congress, putting him in direct opposition to some of his older colleagues. His trenchant approach in an article published recently, in which he pointed to the wholesale injustice that was suffered by the poor as a direct result of the Emergency that then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared in 1975, has caused renewed internal sniping, etc., about his future in the party.

The next day, Tharoor published the article, Manickam Tagore, a Congress MP, made a coded swipe at the former on social media, accusing him of parroting the BJP and calling him a party anointment. “When a Colleague starts repeating BJP lines word for word, you begin to wonder — is the Bird becoming a parrot? Mimicry is cute in birds, not in politics,” Tagore wrote on X, and he was really referring to the use of words by Tharoor.

In Kerala, the state of residence of Tharoor, where the next year’s assembly elections will take place, the attack was even more direct. The veteran Congress leader K Muraleedharan had questioned Tharoor on his loyalties to the party by saying he should first of all decide which party he is in. The statement came after Tharoor tweeted a secret survey, which predicted the politician as the most likable candidate to be the chief minister of Kerala state.

Tharoor in his article remembered the events of the time when Sanjay Gandhi, son of Indira Gandhi, and uncle to Rahul Gandhi, led controversial policies under the Emergency, which included the forced sterilization operations against the rural and poor localities using force and violence.

The BJP did not miss the chance and replied that it took a Congress leader 50 years to accept the fact that the Emergency was very dark. BJP MP Trivedi further stated that this response of the Congress to Tharoor’s article only shows that it continues to shamelessly prove it defends the Emergency and the attitude behind it.

Tharoor has in the past earned himself criticism in his own party due to his open admiration of the foreign policy of PM Modi.
