On Monday, the Congress strongly attacked US President Donald Trump regarding his remarks on the continued buying of Russian oil by India and cited the fact that Washington is placing undue pressure on the government of India and questioned the role played by the Narendra Modi government towards dealing with the situation. The Opposition also condemned what it termed as the US contradictory policy towards India, despite constant open demonstrations of affection between the two leaders.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary, communications in-charge, stated that America still adheres to a blow hot, blow cold model in its dealings with India. He was responding to what Trump said earlier in the day when the US President said that India had done something so that he would be happy and that the tariffs on Indian goods could be increased quickly, unless Washington addressed its issues.
According to Trump, India had a wish to see me smiling, and he said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi knew about his unhappyness. Trump also added that the tariffs on India might be raised very fast, which was often interpreted as a reference to the oil business between India and Russia. It is not a new stance of the US government to be against the importation of Russian crude into India, and this had been one of the reasons cited previously as to why the tariffs were doubled in August 2025 to 50 per cent on Indian goods.
Trump has been reported to repeat that the US might further increase tariffs in case India fails to cooperate on the Russian oil problem. In reaction to such comments, Ramesh went to social media platform X to say that years of Indian public diplomacy and symbolic gestures had not brought any tangible good to India.
He asserted that high-profile occurrences like Namaste Trump and Howdy Modi, regular applause and even obvious personal cordiality between the two leaders have not worked into consistent or even predictable US policy towards India.
