Amid the rising storm of politics over certain leaders’ controversial remarks on the Pahalgam terror attack, the Congress has taken prompt action to control the narrative. In order to dispel forms of controversies generated from off-the-cuff statements, the party leadership has directed all party members to avoid making unnecessary statements that could be misconstrued as the party’s position.

Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh also clarified that the only statements with which the party stands are those made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and authorised AICC office bearers. According to him, Congress had already indicated its clear and official stand at the all-party meeting that followed the heinous attack that claimed 25 tourists and a Kashmiri civilian’s lives.

Ramesh posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Some Congress leaders have been talking to the media. Its is not representing the views of the Indian National Congress (INC), they speak by themselves,” he explained. Regarding the party’s stand on this critical time, he said the CWC resolution, along with what Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have said, describes the party’s position.

Though the terror attack revealed lapses in security and intelligence, Ramesh stressed the need for the community to be united and work as one. “We must be in solidarity, constant discussion between the Opposition and the government and a united front against terror while it is at its most sensitive.”

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah found himself among the leaders who triggered controversies by opposing any talk of war with Pakistan. Such individual remarks prove to be the Congress leadership’s distancing from such individual remarks to avoid any political damage in view of the Pahalgam tragedy and focus on national unity.
