Once again, a debate about surgical strikes has broken out, as the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) keep trading caustic remarks about past military operations they say were conducted in Pakistan. There was more fuel added to the controversy after the recent Operation Sindoor, when the nation experienced heightened feelings.

The Congress party’s video on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday said that the UPA government conducted six surgical strikes. It said, “No Noise. No PR. Only Resolute Action. The Congress Government Organized 6 Surgical Strikes.”

As Congress’s Shashi Tharoor led a delegation on a tour across the US, Panama, Colombia, Brazil and Guyana during the political slugfest, he made a controversial remark. Tharoor said, “It was under Narendra Modi’s term that India crossed the Line of Control to carry out a surgical strike.” His party and others outside disagreed with the statement, which encouraged the BJP to doubt the Congress’s promises.

They shot back by blaming Congress for spreading false information. In April 2018, the BJP relied on a statement from the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) saying that there were no surgical strikes under the UPA. Even Congress’s numbers related to national security are not to be trusted. There is an urgent need for Darpok Congress to stop lying, the party wrote.

Randeep Surjewala, as the general secretary of Congress, clarified that, as the then communications in-charge, he had explained the role of the party in these operations to the public. According to Congress, there were strikes in the Bhattal Sector, the Sharda Sector and the Neelam Ghati between the years 2008 and 2014.

The matter continues to spark disagreements because both parties argue about who is better on security issues.
