According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast, regions of north India are expected to experience cold wave conditions as the new year begins, along with rain and snow.
Some parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan are expected to experience cold wave to severe cold wave conditions between December 30 and January 2, according to the weather agency. “Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions likely in a few pockets of Himachal Pradesh; cold wave conditions in isolated pockets of Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan,” the IMD said in its latest forecast.
Moderate rainfall, thunderstorms in UP
On Saturday, the weather service also predicted that when the rain stops, temperatures in Western and Eastern Uttar Pradesh are likely to drop significantly by December 29. The weather will clear up from Sunday, according to IMD scientist Atul Kumar Singh, who told media that the next two to three days will see a considerable drop in lowest temperatures of 3-6 degrees Celsius.
“In the last 24 hours, most places over western Uttar Pradesh and some places over eastern Uttar Pradesh witnessed rainfall. Today, light to moderate rainfall is likely over some places in western Uttar Pradesh and most places in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Thunderstorms are also likely at some places. The weather will become dry from tomorrow… Minimum temperatures will fall by 3-6 degrees Celsius in the next 2-3 days.,” he said.
Snowfall to continue in Himachal Pradesh
It is anticipated that Himachal Pradesh will continue to have one or two mild periods of snowfall and light showers until the morning of December 29. According to IMD, until tomorrow morning, there is a chance of heavy rain or snowfall in a few isolated areas over the districts of NE-Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, northern Mandi, Lahul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and northern Sirmaur.
Beginning in the morning of December 30, new waves, heavy fog, and ground fronts are anticipated to begin to form across the state’s lower hills and plains. Until midnight tonight, Shimla city and the surrounding areas will continue to have intermittent, light precipitation, according to the weather department’s latest report.
Heavy snowfall disrupts life in Kashmir
On December 28, Kashmir experienced the season’s biggest snowfall, which hampered the water and power supply and affected air, rail, and road traffic, throwing daily life out of gear. While the plains in central Kashmir experienced moderate precipitation, the plains in south Kashmir experienced heavy to extremely heavy snowfall. According to officials, light to moderate snowfall fell over the north Kashmir plains.
Delhi sees highest single-day of rain in December since 1923
Up till 8:30 am on Saturday, Delhi received 41.2 mm of rain in a 24-hour period, the highest rainfall in a single December day since 1923 and the second-highest in recorded history since 1901. In Delhi NCR, the meteorological service has issued an orange alert for Sunday and a yellow alert for the next two days, warning of fog and advising residents to exercise caution.
“A spell of very light rain or drizzle was observed in some isolated places. An orange alert has been issued for Sunday, warning people of the possibility of a dense fog in most places and very dense fog in isolated places,” said an IMD official.
