The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) conducted a fast rescue operation on Thursday to airlift an injured Iranian fisherman from the Arabian Sea to Goa for immediate medical attention. The fisherman was reportedly injured in both eyes and suffered a deep laceration to his right ear due to an explosion while transferring fuel on the Iranian fishing vessel Al-Owais, which experienced an engine failure.
Upon receiving a distress call from the dhow, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Mumbai immediately activated the International Safety Net and directed nearby vessels, including MT STI Grace, a crude oil tanker, to assist the injured man. The ICG Ship Sachet, returning from a task in East Africa, was also called to action to assist.
With telemedicine support from the ICG, the injured man was treated onboard; however, his condition worsened, prompting a long-range naval helicopter from Goa to be launched to airlift the man from ICGS Sachet, located 180 km off the coast. He was safely transferred by helicopter to Goa Medical College Hospital for further treatment, and he is now receiving medical care.
