Pune: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has taken firm stance against the illegal pubs running in Pune, directing the Pune Police Commissioner to take tough measures against the city’s illegal bars and pubs. Further, CM Shinde directed the Commissioner to crack down on illegal establishments running in the city.
This happened shortly after a widely shared video emerged of young people using drugs at a Pune bar. The directive underscores the government’s commitment to maintain urban planning standards and ensure compliance of legal norms.
To make Pune a drug-free city, CM Shinde gave Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar instructions to employ bulldozers against illegal structures connected to narcotics and to take action against peddlers. The CM gave permission for authorities to start prosecuting drug dealers and to tear down illegal bars and structures that violate building rules.
A video allegedly captured at the Liquid Leisure Lounge, or L3, on Fergusson College Road two days earlier featured young people using drugs and other narcotics. The video brought attention to all the Pune bars that are violating drug control regulations.
The excise department has detained six waiters at L3 for allegedly violating liquor stock regulations, while the police probe into the viral video has resulted in the arrest of eight people, including the event organizer. In relation to the matter, the administration suspended two beat marshals from the area who were on night duty.
Leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Dhiraj Ghate, urged the Pune Municipal Corporation and police to take serious action against the pub, claiming that his party will not permit club culture to thrive in the city, which is renowned for its IT sector and educational institutions.
Congress MLA Ravindra Dhangekar, who represents the Kasba constituency in the city, claimed that police were encouraging the trade of drugs, which were readily available in large numbers in Pune.
