Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X, highlighted the Assam flood conditions and stated that the situation remained dire and over 1.17 lakh people were displayed across ten districts of the state.
According to him, 968 villages in 27 revenue circles spread over 10 districts have been inundated by floodwaters. CM Sarma continued, saying that 17,661 people were seeking refuge in 134 relief camps, and 94 relief distribution facilities were managed by government agencies.
Sarma stated that the Kushiyara river in the Barak Valley was flowing above the danger line at Karimganj. According to media reports, Karimganj was one of the areas most severely impacted by the flood.
The situation caused by the floods had somewhat improved on Saturday as fewer people were affected. But the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) announced two more deaths. In its press release on June 22, the IMD issued a red signal for Assam, predicting thunderstorms and significant rainfall over the region for a few more days.
2,20,546 animals, including poultry, have been impacted by the flooding. According to media reports, 3,995.33 hectares of crops have also been flooded. ADMA claimed that damage has been done to highways, bridges, embankments, homes, and cattle sheds throughout the state.
Prior to the current floods, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Assam government of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of betraying the people’s desire to prevent flooding in the state. On Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will conduct a review meeting to assess preparedness for flooding. This time, the Assam floods have claimed 37 lives and left one missing.
