DEHRADUN – A powerful cloudburst early Tuesday morning has wreaked havoc in Dehradun, causing flash floods, sweeping away vehicles, and inundating homes and commercial establishments. Two people went missing during the downpour, and some shops were washed away by the force of the swollen rivers, including the Tamsa and Chandrabhaga.

Chandrabhaga River surged and the water reached the highway. The SDRF had to step in to rescue three people stranded in the river. Several vehicles were stuck due to inundation.

The Sahastradhara area was particularly hard-hit, with frightening visuals emerging of water gushing through streets, carrying debris and mud. Officials have reported that two people are currently missing in the area, and rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police are on the ground conducting search and rescue operations. Several shops and hotels in the market area have sustained significant damage.

Scary visuals are emerging from across Dehradun, capturing the scale of the destruction. In several videos, the Tamsa river can be seen swollen and flowing with a strong current. Debris also accumulated around the premises of the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple in the city.

The monsoon fury also impacted the revered Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple, where the Tamsa River overflowed its banks, flooding the temple courtyard and rising up to the statue of Hanuman. While the sanctum sanctorum remained safe, the premises suffered considerable damage.

In response to the emergency, the District Magistrate has ordered the closure of all schools from Class 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centres for the day. Authorities have urged residents to avoid venturing into vulnerable areas near rivers and streams as water levels remain high. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has stated that he is personally monitoring the situation and that rescue and relief teams are working on a war footing to assist the affected population. The cloudburst also caused damage to a bridge near Fun Valley on the Dehradun-Haridwar National Highway, disrupting traffic. The incident highlights the continued vulnerability of the Himalayan region to extreme weather events during the monsoon season.
