On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India has chosen to use nuclear, solar, wind, and hydropower to power its future development.
PM Modi stated, “Today’s India is preparing a base not only for today but for the next thousand years,” during his speech at Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, during the 4th Global Renewable Energy Investor’s Meet and Expo (RE-INVEST).
He declared, “India is fully aware of its energy needs and requirements to become a developed nation by 2047.”
PM Modi emphasized that due to the lack of oil and gas reserves, India had chosen to base its future on non-fossil fuel sources like hydropower and nuclear energy. Every power user has the potential to become a power producer through the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, according to PM Modi.
According to him, a small family that uses 250 units of electricity per month, produces 100 units, and sells those units back to the grid can save almost ₹25,000 annually. Prime Minister Modi stated, “People will benefit by about ₹25,000 from their electricity bill,” noting that money saved is money earned.
The entire amount would exceed ₹10 lakh, he continued, if the saved funds were put in the Public Provident Fund (PPF) for 20 years. According to the prime minister, the PM Surya Ghar scheme is helping to create jobs and safeguard the environment by creating about 20 lakh jobs. The government also hopes to use this program to train 3 lakh young people to be skilled laborers. One lakh young people would work as solar PV technicians out of them.
“Every 3 kilowatts of solar electricity generated will prevent emission of 50-60 tonne of carbon dioxide”, he said, noting the contributions of every family in fighting climate change. “The Centre is aiming to make Ayodhya, a model solar city”, PM Modi said.
