Bengaluru – Incidents of unrest and communal tension have emerged from Karnataka, casting a shadow over the Ganesh idol immersion festivities. Police in Mandya and Shivamogga have reported separate incidents that led to a breakdown of order and legal action against those involved.

In response, the police imposed Section 144 in the area and arrested several individuals, confirmed Karnataka Home Minister G Parmeshwara.

According to the information, on the night of 7 September, when the procession being taken out for the immersion of Ganpati in Mandya reached near a mosque, it was pelted with stones from the mosque. After this, the people involved in the procession also got agitated and the situation between the two communities became tense. There was stone pelting from both sides and 8 people were injured in it. People going for Ganpati immersion have also alleged that the idol of Lord Ganesha was attacked. After the clash, heavy police force has been deployed on the spot and the injured have been admitted to the hospital. The police has taken action in the violence and stone pelting case and arrested 21 people. At the same time, after the dispute, Section 163 has been implemented in the entire area.

The Bharatiya Janata Party and other Hindu organizations have strongly condemned the stone pelting during the Ganpati immersion. The police have also accused the police of a major lapse in security during the Shobha Yatra.

For the unversed,  this is not the first incident of clashes between two communities during Ganesh Visarjan in Mandya. Last year, there was stone pelting between two communities during Ganesh Visarjan in Nagamangala town of Mandya. During that time, many shops and vehicles were set on fire. Last year also, the police had imposed Section 144 in the area and deployed additional police force to deal with any situation. The police had also arrested many people.

During the Ganesh Visarjan procession in Jannat Nagar, Sagar, Shivamogga, a video has emerged of two children allegedly spitting near the Ganesh idol. The video went viral, leading to tension in the area. The children’s mother has come forward and apologised, clarifying that it was unintentional and with no intent to disrespect. Local Muslim leaders helped ease the tension by offering garlands to the Ganesh idol and participating in the puja.
