CJI Sanjiv Khanna has asked Justice Yashwant Varma to provide his answer within 48 hours after the three-judge enquiry panel validated that his home had cash. A three-judge inquiry panel submitted its confidential report to the CJI on May 4, which confirmed allegations that Justice Varma had previously denied.
A three-member inquiry team consisting of Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Judge Sheel Nagu and Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Judge GS Sandhawalia, and Karnataka High Court Judge Anu Sivaraman. Sources confirm that the panel reached its decision by questioning Justice Varma while meeting with his staff and court officials, as well as CPWD personnel and representatives from the Delhi Fire Service and senior police leaders, including Delhi’s top police officer.
A fire broke out at Justice Varma’s official Tughlaq Crescent residence during his time as a Delhi High Court judge on March 14. Besides being out of Delhi during Holi holidays, Justice Varma learned about the blaze from his private secretary. A post-fire check at the property revealed unexplained amounts of cash, which led to the creation of an enquiry team.
Justice Varma rejected these claims by stating they formed part of a “conspiracy,” and he insisted his home contained no cash. The panel’s reported results stand against the assertions made by Justice Varma. The Chief Justice penned a letter to Justice Varma immediately after the report’s release, which stated that his urgent reply was needed before any additional steps would be implemented. Right now, Justice Varma holds his position at the Allahabad High Court.
