Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit India on a two-day trip that will begin on Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed late Saturday night. The visit is also timely now at a crucial moment when the two countries are trying to relax tensions that have been prevailing since the incidents of Galwan Valley incidents in 2020. Wang Yi will conduct the 24th round of Special Representatives (SR) talks with India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval regarding the boundary question. Wang and Doval are the official SRs of such boundary negotiations, which is one of the most significant measures to start dealing with an old problem of the border conflict.

The MEA said, “Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit India on 18 and 19 August at the invitation of NSA Ajit Doval who is also a member of the Politburo of the Communist party of China.” During the visit, Wang will also engage with the External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, in the bilateral discussion, which focuses on improving the diplomatic relationship.

The visit runs ahead of a trip by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to China later this month, during which he will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin on August 31 and September 1 after visiting Japan. The last time Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met was in Kazan in October 2024, when they decided to resume dialogue channels, just a few days after the two nations agreed to disengagement at the tension areas of Depsang and Demchok.

This is an indication of a new drive to heal frayed relations. The rebuilding of confidence has already started, through some steps that include the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the resumption of the tourist visas in New Delhi to Chinese nationals. Though issues still exist, the trip of Wang Yi is quite an important moment to maintain talking and establishing trust that could strengthen relations between the two Asian heavyweights even more.
