In a bid to curb mounting tensions between India and Pakistan, the Chandigarh Administration has adopted a precautionary measure of withdrawing the holidays of all Union Territory (UT) employees. An official directive issued on Friday has directed all UT administration employees (workers in different departments, boards & corporations) to be at their respective headquarters/stations in Chandigarh until further notice.

The directive pointed out that any leave previously approved was now cancelled in Chandigarh; however, when such leave was given, it was under exception, and because it was still ongoing, the concerned Secretary had the privilege to re-approve the same in exceptional cases. The move is coming as security levels ascend, with the administration focusing on the readiness of its employees during a heightened phase of geopolitical risk.

At the same time, the Haryana government has issued similar orders to its state employees to stay at their work stations and to avoid leaving the assigned areas until further instructions. The state government has also instructed its health department workers to cancel any future leave with immediate effect, having regard to the precarious crisis.

The choice comes after an explosion of tensions between India and Pakistan triggered by a military move. On Wednesday, the Indian armed forces launched missile attacks on nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), including the Jaish-e-Mohammed base in Bahawalpur and the Lashkar-e-Taiba depot in Muridke. These strikes were retaliation against the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that left 26 civilians killed.

On Thursday, the Pakistani military is said to have tried to carry out missile attacks on various Indian cities, including Awantipura, Jammu, Srinagar, and other regions of Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat. To this end, Indian forces have stepped up surveillance/ preparedness at the borders, and security has been tightened countrywide.
