On Saturday, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and the representatives of Karbi outfits in Delhi, the government signed a tripartite Karbi Peace Accord. Speaking on the occasion, Home Minister Amit Shah said, “The signing of the Historic Karbi Anglong Agreement. Modi government is committed to resolving the decades-old crisis, ensuring the territorial integrity of Assam.”
Karbis are a significant ethnic group in Assam, with various factions and divisions. Since the late 1980s, the history of the Karbi Group has been marked by assassinations, ethnic violence, kidnappings, and taxes.
Assam State CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the signing of the Karbi Anglong Agreement marked a historic day in Assam. According to the new covenant, people belonging to hill tribes have the right to make reservations under the sixth plan of the Indian Constitution.
Union Minister and former Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal welcomed the Karbi Anglong Agreement saying, “I want to thank Modi government in the centre which is committed to resolving the decades-old crisis, ensuring the territorial integrity of Assam. I want to thank the CM of Assam also.” He further added that the Assam government would spend around Rs 1000 crores on the development of the Karbi region in the next five years.
Amit Shah stated that Narendra Modi is committed to resolving the decade-old crisis and ensuring the territorial integrity of Assam and that the centre has fulfilled its previous three agreements. 80% of the commitments made and almost 100% of Bodolan.
