Responding to social media platform X (previously Twitter), which had blocked the account of global news agency Reuters in India, the Indian government has said that the move seems to have been an error on the part of the Elon Musk-owned company.
As media reports indicated, the government had sent a legal dictum in May this year to X to suppress several accounts including that of Reuters with regards to its Operation Sindoor. This order dated May 7. However, some accounts were blocked then as the instructions required, but X handle of Reuters was available in India even after the withholding order.
Now it seems that X had acted on the previous order in the recent past leading to blocking of the account of Reuters in India. According to the government officials, the issue is no longer relevant and the X should reverse the action at once.
“There was an order on May 7 (in the course of Operation Sindoor) which was not done. X apparently has imposed that order now which is not a correct move on their part. We have approached X (to settle it) as soon as possible, said an official source quoted by a news agency.”
According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), it has requested X to clarify why it has suddenly blocked the account of Reuters despite the fact that there is no active order towards effecting such blockage. The government has made it clear that it desires the restoration of Reuters X handle in the nearest future.
The Operation Sindoor, which was an intelligence-led national security operation and was carried out in May, some accounts were blocked temporarily to ensure that the operational secrecy and security are maintained and to ensure that there should be order in the society.
There are more accounts waiting to be given on the response of X and reinstatement of account.
