This decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to build a 6 lane Zirakpur Bypass, a strategic infrastructure project to decongest traffic in Punjab and Haryana. This bypass will span a distance of 19.2 kilometers and e will connect the NH-7 (Zirakpur-Patiala) to NH-5 (Zirakpur-Parwanoo) and would be build at an estimated cost of ₹1,878.31 crore.

The project involves the construction under the hybrid annuity mode and comes within the fold of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which is India’s flagship infrastructure undertaking to make India a well connected resource rich Nation. This is the first among what is planned to eventually become a ring road for the Chandigarh–Mohali–Panchkula urban area, said Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Start point of the Zirakpur Bypass will be NH-7 (Chandigarh-Bathinda) junction at Zirakpur and end point at NH-5 junction at Panchkula in Haryana. Its main aim is to divert the through traffic away from the highly congested urban areas such as Zirakpur, Panchkula and Mohali. The bypass will not only provide a direct route for the traffic coming from Patiala, Delhi, Mohali Aerocity towards Himachal Pradesh and thereby reducing the travel time but also improving the road safety in the region.

This project is highly important in reducing congestion in the tri city region consisting of Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali, the central government said. The bypass will also enhance connectivity across key national highways like NH-7, NH-5 and NH-152 and enhance in road mobility and help in smoother traffic flow and contribute to the regional economic development. It is a major step in building next generation of infrastructure in the line of PM Gati Shakti vision.
