The Union government has given a nod for Arunachal Frontier Highway, a major infrastructure project to modernise the connectivity and broaden security areas in India’s northeastern border regions. During the first-ever Joint Mega Nyokum Yullo Celebration held in Boasimla, Kamle district, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that the approval had been made. He has described the project as a ‘game changer’ for Arunachal Pradesh, a long-awaited dream that will significantly push the development of the region.

The 1,400 km long highway would mainly spread across 12 districts along the India-China border, at some places just 20 km away from the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The Centre has committed an estimated ₹42,000 crore for the construction of the project, one of the highest single investments in any infrastructure project, according to a statement from the Centre. This massive investment highlights the commitment of the Modi government to infrastructure at the border, which is to increase its connectivity in remote villages and ensure that the movement of troops is fast for national security, Rijiju added.

While expressways such as Mumbai Pune Expressway and Jaipur Delhi Corridor cost a fraction of this cost, the cost incurred on Arunachal Frontier Highway is needed because of its rugged terrain and strategic importance, Rijiju stated.

Key districts will be crossing on the highway like E. Kameng, Bichom, Kra Daadi, Upper Subansiri, Shi Yomi, Anjaw, and Changlang, where accessibility to remote areas was not possible for a long time. Rijiju also indicated that more infrastructure transformation projects in the pipeline will take place in Arunachal Pradesh.

Apart from adding to economic growth in the area, the anticipated project will support national security by helping to improve the logistics and mobility of defence forces deployed along the border.
