National Sports Governance Bill: The central government is going to introduce the National Sports Governance Bill in Parliament on July 23. With the implementation of this bill, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will also come under the regulation of the government like the rest of the National Sports Federations (NSFs), even though it does not take any financial assistance from the Center.
A senior official of the Sports Ministry has confirmed that BCCI will be brought under the purview of the National Sports Board (NSB) as soon as the law is made. Till now BCCI considered itself an autonomous body and was outside the laws of the government, but after cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics (Los Angeles), its accountability has increased further.
According to sources, BCCI will now work under the rules and accountability system of the country like other sports federations. This will ensure that the cricket board also follows the principles of transparency and good governance like other sports associations.
What is the purpose of this bill?
- Ensuring timely elections in sports associations
- establish administrative accountability
- Creating a strong sports infrastructure for the welfare of sportspersons
- Establishment of a National Sports Tribunal to settle disputes related to sports
This tribunal will give the final award on matters ranging from selection disputes to electoral irregularities.
Central government will form National Sports Board
Under this bill, a National Sports Board (NSB) will be formed, all members of which will be appointed by the Central Government. This board will have the power to recognize sports federations, fund them or suspend them on the basis of complaints and irregularities. The board will also ensure that all sports federations follow the highest standards of governance, financial transparency and ethics.
An important provision in the bill is that the maximum age limit of administrators can be increased from 70 to 75 years, provided that the relevant international bodies do not object. This can directly benefit BCCI President Roger Binny, who recently turned 70. After this amendment, he can remain in office for the next 5 years.
