Census 2027: The Government of India has notified Census 2027 on Monday. The central government will conduct caste census in two phases. According to the notification, the first phase will start from October 1, 2026. It includes 4 hill states – Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The second phase will start from March 1, 2027. In this, the census will start in the rest of the states of the country. This will be the first census of the country after 2011. Earlier on Sunday, Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the preparations for the 16th census with senior officials.
Let us tell you that the Center had announced to conduct caste census on 30 April 2025. This will be the first caste census in the country after independence. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had said that the caste census will be conducted along with the basic census.
Why is census necessary?
It is very important to have a census. All opposition parties including the Congress have been demanding a caste census. It is done every 10 years. Accordingly, the next census was to be held in 2021, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Electoral constituencies are created on the basis of the census and seats are reserved for SC and ST categories. Ministries from education to rural development use census data to locate schools, primary health centers and infrastructure projects. Article 82 of the Constitution mandates delimitation of constituencies based on the most recent census. Articles 330 and 332 reserve seats in legislative assemblies for SCs and STs based on their population ratio.
How is the census conducted?
This process is also completed in two phases. First is making a list of houses and census of houses and then the second phase is counting of population. There is a gap of several months between these phases. To complete the census, about 30 lakh census takers will be needed. Most of the school teachers are expected to be deployed in this. Apart from this, there are about 1,20,000 workers at the district and sub-district level. They manage, supervise or help in the census work.
