On Friday, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan emphasised that the border conflict between India and China is the largest challenge facing the country. Addressing a rally in Gorakhpur, the CDS reminded the people that India has fought several battles in the past, such as in 1947, 1962, and 1965, and the problem of boundaries being left unresolved remains a burning issue even to this day.

General Chauhan observed that India has been able to deal with multiple threats over the decades, but the issue of the boundary with China remains by far the most complicated and the longest-lasting. Problems in the face of countries do not disappear immediately; they manifest themselves differently and continue in the course of history. In my opinion, the Kashmir row with China will be the greatest problem facing India, and it will always stand there, he said.

He also emphasised that other significant impediments include the proxy war that Pakistan is waging against India. He indicated that Islamabad has continuously adopted an approach of seeking to bleed India with a thousand cuts, using terrorism and cross-border insurgency as weapons of war. In his view, this perpetual enmity is the second most urgent security concern of India.

General Chauhan also provided insight into the dynamic future of modern warfare and outlined that modern wars no longer exist only on land, in the air, and on the sea. Rather, other areas like cyber warfare and threats in space have become new realities that India needs to prepare to encounter. He highlighted how difficult it is to plan against the enemy who is not just a nuclear state, but the stakes are greater and the decisions are finer.

To conclude his speech, the CDS demanded vigilance always, modernisation of the defence force and a balanced attitude to national security. He once again stated that India should always be ready to address the emerging threats without jeopardising its sovereignty.
