On the same day that AAP’s Durgesh Pathak was appointed as Aam Aadmi Party’s co-incharge in Gujarat for the coming 2027 elections, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) carried out a raid at his house. Noting they have been ‘strongly condemned’ for making the move by the AAP, the AAP has called it ‘a politically motivated act’ by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The claims were made by AAP national general secretary Sandeep Pathak on X (formerly Twitter), who revealed the development and said that the raid reflects BJP’s fear of AAP’s rise in Gujarat. “Just after his appointment in Gujarat, the BJP sees AAP as a rising threat in the state, and it’s clear from the CBI raid on Durgesh Pathak’s residence that the BJP has decided to strike at him. That is nothing but an effort to intimidate and prevent our campaign,” he wrote.

Officials said the CBI has registered a case against Durgesh Pathak for allegedly violating the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). Nevertheless, details remain pending on the nature of the violations.

AAP MP Rajya Sabha Sanjay Singh, too, reacted to the incident and said the BJP uses central agencies to quell opposition voices. “The Modi government is misusing CBI once again to target AAP. After Durgesh Pathak took up charge of Gujarat, the raids started from then on.” Singh posted that this was a desperate move to suppress our rising momentum.

Earlier this week, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a related raid conducted the search at AAP MLA Kulwant Singh’s residence in Mohali in connection with the ₹ 48,000 crore PACL scam. Singh was not present, but his family members were interrogated because the ED operation was linked to his real estate firm.

But these back-to-back actions by the central agencies have only prompted AAP to claim that the BJP-led central government has been in the habit of conducting political witch-hunting.
