V Chandrasekhar who led the investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata in the RG Kar Medical College is one of the 31 CBI officers receiving police medals during the 77 th Republic Day.
Chandrasekhar is a 2000-batch IPS officer of the Gujarat cadres who has been awarded the President Medal of Distinguished Service, which is among the highest in the policing profession. As per the list of awards, published by the government on Sunday, the award is given based on his leadership in the high profile and sensitive investigation that resulted in the conviction of the prime accused in a matter of few months after the chargesheet was filed.
The President has also awarded the Presidential Medal of Distinguished Service to several other officers who were presiding over the case. These are Superintendent of Police Amit Srivastava, Additional SP Mukesh Sharma, Sub-Inspector Pramod Kumar Yati, Assistant Sub-Inspector Chaman Lal, and Head Constable Ramu Golla and because of their great contribution to the investigation.
Moreover 25 CBI officers have been given the Police Medal of Meritorious Service (PMMS). These include 2007-batch IPS officer C Venkata Subba Reddy which is serving as the Joint Director but his batchmate Sadanand Shakarrao Date who has served as the DIG and later reverted to his cadres as Inspector General.
Other awards have been given to senior legal and investigative officers including Deputy Legal Advisor Manmohan Sharma, Additional SPs Baidyanath Samal, Kailash Sahu, and various Assistant SPs, inspectors and technical personnel and constables.
The awards showcase the combined effort and professionalism of the CBI in dealing and managing sensitive and complex cases of national concern.
