In collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been able to bring back the wanted gangster Sahil Chauhan who was in Thais custody, officials confirmed on Saturday.

Chauhan is a member of the infamous Bhuppi Rana gang, which has been involved in criminal activities throughout Haryana, Delhi, and Chandigarh. He was sought after in several grave cases such as murder, attempted murder, extortion, and dacoity. He was also under the watch of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) during his stay in a foreign country.

The officials state that in 2017, Chauhan was a part of a case when he fired at a competing gangster Monu Rana inside the Jagadhari Court Complex, Yamunanagar, Haryana. The chargesheet was subsequently leveled against him and he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. But on posting bail he ran out of the country and was still absconding.

After receiving a request by Haryana Police, the CBI got an Interpol Red Notice against Chauhan. He was later traced in Bangkok and arrested and sent back to India. He was arrested by Haryana Special Task Force (STF) on arrival at the international airport in Delhi.

The progress delineates the growing attention being given to extraditing fugitives in India. In recent years CBI efforts have been greatly enhanced by the Global Operations Centre which has brought dozens of fugitives back. Assuming that Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, has asked agencies to enhance extradition systems and set up special centers to deal with such high profile cases.
