The CBI has alleged that Kolkata-based RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s former principal, Sandip Ghosh, has had corrupt relations with the other accused persons to fraudulently gain what the agency has described as ‘wrongful benefits. ‘ These charges are part of the ongoing CBI investigation into alleged corruption at RG Kar Medical College. Ghosh, who was dismissed from his position after a trainee doctor was raped and killed on August 9, is armed with other individuals who defrauded money in different ways. Another case under the CBI probe is of a trainee doctor who was raped by being given injections by Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer attached to Kolkata police.

In addition to Ghosh, the CBI has taken three other individuals into custody: Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali, the alleged corrupt officers. The CBI produced the group before the special court in Alipur on September 3, when the agency recited the allegations against the group. As per the agency Singha and Hazra, the two vendors whom Ghosh was acquainted with from his service at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital “got the benefit “of the hospital contracts when Ghosh moved over to Calcutta National Medical College and later RG Kar Medical College.

Among the charges leveled against him, one of the serious ones entails that Ghosh misused his authority by favoring his personal bodyguard, Afsar Ali, with the business of operating a café on the premises of RG Kar. The contract was awarded to M/s Eshan Cafe, which is owned by Afsar Ali‘s wife, namely Nargis Khanum. However, in the CBI analysis, it was claimed that Afsar Ali effectively controlled and oversaw all the business and financial transactions of the firm. The tender process, according to the CBI, was rigged in advance, and out of four companies who applied, only M/s Eshan Cafe had sufficient technical qualifications to apply.

Besides this, the CBI is probing Ali in connection with the alleged sale of biomedical waste, which has made the case more encompassing of corruption charges.
