New Delhi: India recorded 7,189 fresh infections in the past 24 hours. The recovery rate at 98.40 per cent accounted for 7,286 recuperations in the last 24 hours taking the total recoveries to 3,42,23,263.

The number of active cases stood at 77,032 accounting for 0.22 per cent of the total number of cases. The active cases reported a decline by 484 in the last 24 hours. However, the mortality rate recorded at 1.38 per cent reported a spike in deaths recording 387 fatalities, taking the cumulative death toll to 4,79,520.

The fast spreading Omicron infection has now infected 415 people in India, informed the ministry of health. Nearly 115 have recovered so far it added. Maharashtra has the highest number of Omicron infection with 108, followed by Delhi with 79. Gujarat has 43 cases and Telangana 38. Kerala has a total of 37 Omicron cases, followed by Tamil Nadu with 34. No state in the north-east has reported any Omicron case.

The rise of Omicron, halted Christmas celebrations. States have imposed night curfew and have further tightened restrictions today. Gatherings of five or more will not be allowed in Maharashtra between 9 pm and 6 am, the state government has said. Haryana and Delhi have also tightened restrictions this Christmas, though Delhi has allowed places of worship to remain open.

As per the statistics reported to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, so far 141.01 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in the country including 66.09 lakh doses given in the last 24 hours.
