In a major diplomatic announcement, Canada and India have now decided to promote their common interests thanks to a meeting between Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday.

According to a statement made by Global Affairs Canada on Tuesday, the ministers have deliberated on the promotion of major sectors such as economic prosperity, security, and world governance, and also on enhancing bilateral relationships between the two nations. Such talks are based on the earlier interactions between the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis in June.

Minister Anand added that Canada is ready to develop a matured commercial relationship with India that covers areas like agriculture, critical minerals, and energy products. The two ministers also acknowledged the recent appointments of the high commissioners in the countries of each other with recognition of their contribution to facilitating trade, investment and diplomatic dialogue. Dinesh Patnaik of India has taken over Ottawa and Christopher Cooter of Canada has taken over New Delhi.

In the second half of October, Minister Anand will visit India, and the trip will also include China and Singapore. On X, Jaishankar wrote that the meeting was good and that appointing of high commissioners is a good move towards restoring the bilateral relationship. He also said he was looking forward to bringing Anand to India.

The experts have hailed the progress, especially in the political, law enforcement, and security tracks, as seen in recent high-level interactions like the visit of the National Security and Intelligence Advisor of Canada, Nathalie G. Drouin, to New Delhi, where she discussed with the National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. According to the analysts, it should be followed by practical economic and commercial results as the two nations strive to strengthen their strategic alliance.
