New Delhi: The call by Samajwadi Party MP RK Chaudhary to expunge the word ‘Sengol’ from the Parliament chamber has led to a political confrontation. Chaudhary was still protesting why they were there referring to it as “monarchy” and demanding it be replaced with the Constitution. In a letter to the chairman of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, he said that he was taken back when he met the Sengol while saying the oath.

Chaudhary said the Constitution represents democracy, and in comparison to Sengol for him, it means Raj-Dand or Royal authority. He bitterly accused the BJP-led government headed by Modi of putting the replica of the Sengol in the parliament. He says this is undemocratic.

Describing the house as a temple of democracy and not a palace from a monarchical age, Chaudhary tried to strike down the Sengol for violating the constitutional provisions.

Backing Chaudhary’s argument, another Samajwadi Party leader, Akhilesh Yadav, noted that the Prime Minister at one time wanted to pay his respect to the Sengol and said Chaudhary’s statement may have been a reminder to that fact.

In turn, the opposition was accused of practicing sectarian politics by BJP’s Chirag Paswan, Union Minister, unconditionally declaring that the Sengol was the subject worthy of reverent attention. He criticized the oppositionists as being negative and called upon them to return to doing politics positively.

Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonwalla bluntly condemned the Samajwadi Party for their extend on Sengol, connecting it to previous scandals referring to the symbols of culture.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore extended his support to Chaudhary’s demand and resentment, which made him unhappy over the government’s fanciful dramatic starting of the new Parliament by placing the Sengol.

Another RJD MP from Bihar, Misa Bharti, supported Chaudhary for his statement that this Sengol should be banned from active usage in the Parliament and painted as a museum item.

This scepter was deposited in Lok Sabha by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year during the unveiling of the fresh parliamentarian complex.
