New Delhi: The Government of India reappointed Shaktikanta Das as the Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for three more years. The decision was taken by the Cabinets Appointments Committee comprising of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
The official statement said, “the Cabinets Appointments Committee has approved the reappointment of Shaktikanta Das as RBI Governor for a period of three years beyond December 10, 2021, or until further orders, whichever is earlier”.
Previously, Das worked as the Economic Affairs Secretary at the Finance Ministry and took over as 25th RBI Governor in December 2018. He is the first RBI Governor to get an extension under the current Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) led government. If he is able to serve the full six-year term as the governor, he would become the longest-serving RBI governor in almost seven decades.
Shaktikanta Das is a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Tamil Nadu cadre. He has served Indian and Tamil Nadu governments in various capacities including; India’s Sherpa to the G20 and as a member of 15th Finance Commission. During his tenure in Ministry of Finance, he was directly associated with the preparation of 8 Union Budgets. Besides, he has also served as India’s Alternate Governor in the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), New Development Bank (ADB), and Asian Infrastructure Bank (AIB).
